Oh sure, it&#8217;ll bite if you get careless, but you won&#8217;t lose a limb or finger. There&#8217;s a wide range of things to make with it, ranging from simple (eg. a simple puzzle) to complex (eg. intarsia).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a sampling of projects, most of which don&#8217;t fit in anywhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf-1024x1021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-910\" width=\"423\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf-1024x1021.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf-768x766.jpg 768w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/2007_fretwork_wolf.jpg 1110w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 423px) 100vw, 423px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s a fretwork wolf from 2007.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/valentines_2006.jpg\" alt=\"valentines day 2006\" width=\"421\" height=\"468\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><strong>Here&#8217;s a Valentine&#8217;s Day gift that I made for my wife in 2006. &nbsp;The heart with our names at the back was my modification to the original design. &nbsp;Both of the scrolled pieces are from 1\/8-inch baltic plywood, and the base is sapele. &nbsp;It&#8217;s a small piece, about 4 inches wide at the base.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3d_dragon1_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3d_dragon1_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1088\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3d_dragon1_b.jpg 400w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/3d_dragon1_b-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This dragon is a different sort of project. The original pattern was for a single-layer creation. I made it three layers, with the legs and wings added to the sides. Attaching the wings was an &#8220;interesting&#8221; exercise, but it finally got accomplished. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/scrollsaw_pinkflamingo_card.jpg\" alt=\"Scrollsaw pink flamingo card\" width=\"404\" height=\"579\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s a birthday &#8220;card&#8221; that I made for my sister to go along with the intarsia haida eagle. It&#8217;s made of 1\/4-inch baltic birch plywood, and painted with acrylic paints. We signed the back of it.<\/strong><br><strong> [June 2004]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/scrollsaw_mammoth.jpg\" alt=\"Scrollsaw mammoth\" width=\"435\" height=\"294\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is a scrollsaw mammoth puzzle, made out of pine. The tricky bit is that each piece has several more cuts in it to give a sort of &#8220;texture&#8221;. This one was done for my mother as a mother&#8217;s day gift. Actually, I gave it to her un-assembled and didn&#8217;t tell her what it was. In addition, I put the solution in a sealed envelope, just to torment her. Yes, I are a rotten child. (yes, she actually solved it without peeking at the solution)<\/strong><br><strong> [April 2004]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/scrollsaw_trout.jpg\" alt=\"Scrollsaw trout\" width=\"424\" height=\"326\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s another &#8220;woodimal&#8221; project, this time spelling out &#8220;TROUT&#8221;. Done in pine, with a natural danish oil finish. I made this for a co-worker whom I thought needed a bit of cheering up.<\/strong><br><strong> [April 2004]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/dragon_clock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"429\" height=\"323\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This is a fretwork dragon with a small clock. He stands about 8-inches tall. This one is made from 1\/2-inch oak, finished with a natural oil.<\/strong><br><strong> [December 2003]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/gryphon_clock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"435\" height=\"291\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Yet another clock! This one is a pair of gryphons. It&#8217;s about 15-inches wide.<\/strong><br><strong> [December 2003]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/dragon_fretwork.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"345\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This fretwork dragon, and the back piece, are dyed using analine dyes. There are a few &#8220;floating&#8221; sections within it, making cutting it out something of a challange! From 2016. This is a picture of it in its unfinished state, of course. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/fumblethumbs\/xmas_dated_ornaments.jpg\" alt=\"Scrollsaw xmas ornaments\" width=\"420\" height=\"573\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here&#8217;s some of the Christmas dated ornaments that I&#8217;ve made.
