{"id":110,"date":"2012-05-07T19:33:36","date_gmt":"2012-05-07T23:33:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/?page_id=110"},"modified":"2023-07-22T21:50:00","modified_gmt":"2023-07-23T01:50:00","slug":"2006-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/christmas\/2006-2\/","title":{"rendered":"2006"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Stuff made for Christmas 2006.<\/em><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This was a busy, busy season of making stuff. \u00a0Everything was done on the scroll saw this year &#8212; ornaments, Christmas cards (not pictured), and lots of fretwork goodies. \u00a0Most of the wood used was thick hardwood, using stock left over from last year (it&#8217;s always a &#8216;good thing&#8217; to buy extra!). \u00a0I was a lot more comfortable scrolling the thick hardwood this year than I was last year. \u00a0In fact, I find that I now prefer it in many ways to thin stock. \u00a0 For one thing the end result has a &#8216;heftier&#8217;, more substantial feel to it. \u00a0For another, while doing the cutting everything happens much more slowly due to the thickness. \u00a0The down side of thick hardwoods is, of course, that it takes longer to cut out the finished piece!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ornament_2006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ornament_2006.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-939\" width=\"456\" height=\"709\" srcset=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ornament_2006.jpg 508w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ornament_2006-193x300.jpg 193w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 456px) 100vw, 456px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The dated ornament for this year is a kind of multi-media effort. It&#8217;s about 4-inches high and is made out of 1\/8-inch Baltic birch plywood, painted with various colours, and finally soaked with a natural oil finish. \u00a0The colours are acrylic paints thinned to make a sort of watercolour effect. \u00a0On a few of them, I painted the lamp in silver, but I think I prefer having some wood showing. \u00a0 And, yes, I know that cardinals have a black patch on their faces but the painting was fussy enough without worrying about teensy-weensy details like that!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-940\" width=\"460\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat.jpg 508w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat-266x300.jpg 266w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s a fretwork cat done in 7\/8-inch red oak and finished in Danish oil. \u00a0The cat&#8217;s face looks very much like our Spooky, I think! \u00a0The overall sized is about 8&#215;10.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat_portrait.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat_portrait.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-941\" width=\"472\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat_portrait.jpg 505w, http:\/\/greiner.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/fretwork_cat_portrait-300x286.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 472px) 100vw, 472px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Here&#8217;s another cat-related piece that is a bit different, but I think it rather looks like our own Bo. \u00a0The head is done in 1\/4-inch Baltic birch plywood, the frame is 1\/2-inch plywood, and the backer is 1\/4-inch plywood. \u00a0The frame is painted &#8220;mars black&#8221;
